When I rent a car, should I buy the extra insurance that they offer?
We get this question a lot!
Almost all New York State personal auto policies provide coverage for a car rented as a temporary substitute vehicle, such as when you are on vacation. There are conditions that may apply in your policy, so be sure to read the part of your policy that deals with this coverage. Personal auto policies often do not cover a moving truck. If you have five or more vehicles, your policy also may not provide coverage for a rental car.
Despite the high likelihood that you already have coverage for your rental car on your personal auto policy, you can choose to purchase the coverage that is offered to you by the rental car company.
